Matilda Art Gallery web site launched

We have finished the web site for Lisa Imbriglio and her Matilda Art Gallery. Lisa Imbriglio strives to create uplifting and enjoyable art. Much of the art is part of a collection with a theme, and many of the themes relate to charities that are making our world a better place. The Matilda Art Gallery offers both prints and originals for sale. Prints as well as originals will be signed and titled by the artist. A variety of papers are available for your prints, including the beautiful, archival Hahnemuhle bamboo paper, which is made from the renewable resource, bamboo.

PHC is now selling fine art prints

PHC's chief photographer, Robert Lewis has begun selling prints and they are available
through the PhcDesigns web site. We are still working out some final details and in the near
future we'll be adding a dedicated section to the PHC site where you can see all the prints that are
available.
In the meantime, you can purchase most of the non-commercial images that are
already on the PHC site. Please check the gallery, photography and images of the month to see what images are availabele now.
If you may be interested in purchasing a print please send an email to info@phcdesigns.com
Please DO NOT include any credit card information in your email. Standard email is not secure and can be intercepted.

Quality:
Our focus is on very high quality, archival prints. We normally print here, in the office where we can easily maintain the print quality to our very high standards. All printing is normally done by or under the direct supervision of Robert on an HP B9180 printer. Features of this printer include:

  • Professional photo quality with archival inks.
  • Print gallery-quality photos and fine art prints with archival, pigment-based HP Vivera inks.
  • Exceptional durability—waterproof photos resist fading for more than 200 years. [1]
  • Black-and-white photos with perfectly neutral gray tones and deep black shadow reproductions
Papers:
We have chosen a few very high quality papers for our work. These include:
  • The world famous Museo Max, 250 GSM, 100% cotton, archival fine art paper. This paper has a matte, velina finish, no optical brighteners and is slightly warm toned.
  • The new bamboo fine art paper from Hahnemuhle - A 290 GSM, natural warm tone, matte finish paper made from a renewable resource. We have been using this new paper for some time now and it gives beautiful results.
  • The new baryta fine art paper from Hahnemuhle. A 325 GSM, fibre based, alpha cellulose, glossy finish paper with brilliant whites and deep blacks. This paper utilizes barium sulphate in it's finish which is one of the materials that makes traditional photo papers so stable and attractive.
  • The classic Hahnemuhle fine art pearl paper. A fibre based, alpha-cellulose paper with a GSM of 285. This paper exhibits a pearlescent / luster finish and is similar to a traditional silver gelatin double-weight photo paper.

Cropping:
In order not to compromise the images we do not necessarily print to standard proportions such as 8x10 or 11x14. So for example if we printed an image it may be 8x12 or 8x8 and in this case we would recommend a custom mat to fit the print and that would fit a standard 11x14 (or larger) frame. We are able to cut the custom mat or if you prefer we can send you just the print and you can take care of the matting and framing.

Framing and sizes:
Because of the vast choices in frames and the risk of shipping glass, we generally do not frame the work. We have found it better to let the client choose a frame that goes well with their taste and the location where the work will be displayed.
Our standard print sizes are anything up to 13x19 inches. For prints larger than 13x19 or if you prefer a paper choice that we do not have, special accommodations can be made.
If you have any special requests, please ask. We aim to please!

[1] Based on preliminary display permanence testing under glass by Wilhelm Imaging Research using HP Advanced Photo Paper and HP Photo Matte. Similar display permanence with additional HP-recommended papers.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Someone tipped me off about some interesting Christmas decorations in Brick, NJ so as I was driving home on a windy Thanksgiving night I went to have a look. I saw a nice display that was especially interesting because the trees are just peaking their fall colors. They are lit with white lights but appear red because of the leaves. In addition to that it was quite windy so you can see them blowing around during the exposures, which were about 15 seconds. The streaks of color in the foreground are the cars on Route 70 passing between the camera and the display.

We have re-designed our Photography Page. The new page has 21 sample photographs demonstrating a variety of subjects. It is laid out with thumbnail images which display a larger image when you mouse over the thumbnail. No clicking is required however because of the number and size of the images it may take a moment for them to load when you first visit the page. As time permits we will separate these and other images into faster loading, separate pages based on subject matter. Customer work always gets done first so unfortunately the PHC site sometimes can't be updated as quickly as we would like.

All of the images that have been in our gallery are still there as well.

The old Photography Page is now under the link for "More information about our photography"

NASCAR Press photo

At Thompson Speedway in Connecticut two of our friends were ironically involved in a crash together. The Blewett brothers from Howell, NJ. John (with hat in this photo) and Jimmy Blewett. John suffered serious injuries and didn't make it.
Now John gets to compete with all the other past legends at the speedway in the sky, where racing doesn't cost any money or heartache. John's friends, family and especially his brother Jimmy are left here with our earthly stresses, emotions and limitations. All we can do is pray for John to rest (race) in peace and for Jimmy and the rest of us to live in peace.

Book Review - Logo Design for Small Business 2 by Dan Antonelli

Reviewed by Bob Lewis

When I opened the box from Amazon my first impression was that this book isn't very big. Most of the books I buy on design, software and photography are between 100 and 500 pages. Dan's book has just 71 pages. I had mixed feelings about this at first. On one hand I was wondering if I had gotten my money's worth and on the other hand I was relieved that I didn't have to find a way to fit another large book into my schedule.

After a couple of days carrying this book around with me I had actually finished reading the whole thing. The short answer to my query above is yes, I got my money's worth.

My impression of this book is that it's a 71 page summary of a four year college design program and it is written more from an applied perspective than an academic perspective. This book doesn't teach you how to use your software, the principles of color science or technical terminology. This book points out things that you need to consider when dealing with real life situations, gives you some solutions to these issues and many sample designs (including the names of many of the fonts). Some examples include:

  • What to do when a customer wants you to create a fresh identity for them using their old art work (that may have been done by their niece in MS Word)
  • What to consider when designing a logo that will be used in different types of collateral. Business cards, web sites, windows and vehicles have different requirements.
  • Differences in designing for a large corporation vs. a small business.
  • Being a successful designer means that your work produces results for your customers. What do you do when a customer says "I just need an inexpensive logo and some cheap cards."? You know that giving them what they asked for will make them and you look bad.
I like this book. It deals with real life and gives real life examples. It is readable in a reasonable amount of time.
I recommend this book to designers and to customers of design services. If you need design services this book will help you understand what your designer is saying and if they are doing a good job for you.

We learned a lesson last week when we killed our router. We were using a USRobotics 8054 wireless router which had worked well for a few years. Due to some new connectivity issues we decided to update the firmware on the router using a flash file available on the USRobotics site. Unfortunately the documentation on the site didn't indicate that the computer used to flash the router must be hard wired to the router. We tried to install the firmware with a computer that was wirelessly connected and the result was a killed router.
The new version of this router is the 5461. We bought one of these and in reading the documentation we saw in bold:
"Important: To ensure a successful upgrade, please perform the firmware upgrade from a client that is physically wired to the router. A wireless client may become disassociated from the router during the upgrade process resulting in an incomplete upgrade."

This probably applies to most, if not all wireless routers and we are sharing our mistake with you so that perhaps you can avoid making the same mistake.

While our network was down production pretty much came to a halt. If you are waiting for samples please rest assured that we will get them to you very soon.

We have posted some photos of Lorena, from the shoot mentioned below and we have scanned and uploaded some work that was originally shot on film.
We are very anxious to display more of our work in the gallery however this is time consuming and we need to take care of our customers work first. Therefore we are developing this site in our "spare time".

A new review of the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Photo Printer has been released and the news is encouraging. We are really looking forward to the arrival of our unit.

Test shoot for Lorena. Look for photos in the gallery very soon. Thanks Lorena. We had a great time and we hope to work with you more in the future.

August 4, 2006

We have been researching java script image galleries and today we have uploaded a test page. This seems to be an attractive presentation and we just hope that it's not too heavy for dial-up modems. Testing is continuing and of course the real gallery pages will be nicely formatted and contain the work of PHC.

A few days ago our Nikon 18-200 VR lens finally arrived. I've been waiting for several months and I was so excited I had to run out at 11:00 pm and take some photos (below). With this lens I'll be able to to better work, faster and miss fewer shots. I'm still waiting for a new printer which I think will be available in less than a month. I'm really looking forward to the new HP B9180 pro. With this new machine we'll be able to do more printing here in the office where we have more control and can get the work done quicker.
